Munich/San Donato Milanese. The historical Mille Miglia 2006 racing event has come to an end with victory for the BMW Group Mobile Tradition Team: Giuliano Cané and his co-driver and wife, Lucia Galliani, were able to decide the race in their favour for the ninth time, seven of them behind the wheel of a BMW. Victory came after a thrilling chase that few could have predicted. The Ladies Cup, the "Coppa delle Dame", went to Franca Boni and her daughter Monica Barziza for the twelfth time adding to their previous wins in these races in the BMW 328. In total there were eleven BMW Group Mobile Tradition Teams officially taking part in the 24th event of the Mille Miglia race. The team of Luciano Cané and Lucia Galliani won the prestigious consistency test of historic cars for the ninth time with 14,849 points. The starter's signal of the historical 1000 miles (approx. 1600 km) along the classic route from Brescia via Ferrara to Rome as well as from the capital back to Brescia via Florence and Bologna sounded on the 11th of May in Brescia. "It is always an enormous pleasure to win this race" declared Giuliano Cané. Taking part in events in vintage vehicles, driving along the most beautiful roads in Italy and the arrival at the finish line to resounding public applause generate powerful emotions that you have to experience at least once in your lifetime. "This is a fantastic win, especially because we achieved it after such a breathtaking chase" he added. The 2006 event - exclusively devoted to cars that had already taken part at least once in a classic Mille Miglia race between 1927 and 1957 - numbered a total of 375 cars participating in the race. In the year in which BMW is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the BMW 328, the Cané-Galliani team achieved their win in the historic BMW 328 MM Roadster that achieved already the third place in the 1940 race. The participants in this year's Mille Miglia 2006 included Marco Saltalamacchia, Chairman and Managing Director of BMW Group Italy, and Alexander Zanardi, the former Formula 1 driver and current World Touring Car Championship driver for BMW Italy-Spain team. The two took part in the "Freccia Rossa" in a BMW 507 where they took turns behind the wheel. Also on this occasion, the car with the start number 204 had a series of special modifications carried out to enable the driver from the Emilia-Romagna to take part once again in the Mille Miglia after his first experience as a navigator the previous year. Other entrants officially participating for the Munich car company included names such as Professor Burkhard Göschel, Board Member of BMW AG, together with Jürgen Kübler in the BMW 328 Touring team with start number 72; Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO of BMW North America, with Roy Spence as the team in the BMW 328 with start number 89 and Prince Leopold of Bavaria with team member Olof Stenhammar in the BMW 328 with start number 82. Chris Bangle, Chief Designer of the BMW Group, was present behind the wheel of a BMW 328 in this year's Mille Miglia in a team with Axel Ganz, while the Director of the BMW Group Mobile Tradition, Holger Lapp, drove in the legendary BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé winner of the Mille Miglia in 1940 with the support of Hans-Jörg Götzl. Last but not least the teams Huetter/Huber in a BMW 328, Mitchell/Carlson in a BMW 507 and Salvatori/Salvatori in a BMW 327 Cabrio were successfully participating as well.
